Chapter Nine

It had been an incredible week, and Ryo couldn’t remember the last time he’d laughed so much. When he was with his mate, time stood still, and nothing else existed except the two of them.

So, it had been somewhat jarring when the real world had intruded upon their perfect happiness. As much as he might wish they could stay wrapped up in each other with no thoughts of the outside world, they both had obligations and responsibilities.

Ryo had returned to his job at the café, and Andre had rescheduled the meetings and phone conferences he’d been ignoring, but they still spent every night together. It had taken a few days, but eventually, they’d found a balance.

Still, he wouldn’t deny that he was looking forward to having the next couple of days off work. Especially since Andre apparently had a big surprise planned for him. His mate wouldn’t give him any details other than the fact that he would need to pack an overnight bag.

With his parents, surprises hadn’t always been a good thing, but Andre wasn’t them. He would never do anything to intentionally hurt him. He didn’t care that Ryo was a mouse shifter or that he sometimes squeaked when he got overly excited.

Andre didn’t think his hair made him look “ridiculous,” as his father had been fond of saying. He loved running his fingers through the long strands, and the look of utter betrayal when Ryo had casually mentioned cutting it had been perfect.

He didn’t give a damn that Ryo liked ketchup on his green beans or that he always needed to sit in the same corner of the sofa. All those harmless little quirks that had infuriated his parents were not only accepted but encouraged. The smile Andre would give him when he worried something he liked was too weird meant more to him than his mate would ever know.

Sure, he still felt a little nervous about their trip, but not for the usual reasons. Although they spent every night together in Andre’s bed, this was different. It felt different anyway.

Andre had been so careful with him, so patient. Though Ryo knew the demon wanted him—the hard cock pressed against his ass every night was kind of a giveaway—he hadn’t tried to initiate anything. He never pressured Ryo for more than he felt comfortable giving.

In the beginning, it had been nice, but now, Ryo was ready for more. He just didn’t know how to ask for the things he wanted. Luckily, he’d spent a lot of years perfecting the art of subtlety, and he had no doubt his mate was perceptive enough to pick up on it.

Holding up the silk and lace panties, he grinned. Okay, maybe they weren’t that subtle.

Dainty and delicate, the underwear fit him like a glove, leaving very little to the imagination. He did worry that the pastel pink would appear too pale against his skin, but he loved the black ribbon that laced up the sides, ending in tiny bows.
